Sony really needs to clean up their numbering scheme to avoid confusing the consumers – they have Xperia Z, Z1, Z Ultra, ZL, ZR, and so on! Today we are concerned about their largest smartphone, or phablet, the Xperia Z Ultra, and it is now available for pre-order on Newegg.com, with a delivery date set for 10/14. The offerings include two models, the HSPA+ (C6802) version for $649.99 and the 4G LTE (C6806) model for $729.99, and both included free shipping. All three colors, Black, White, and Purple are offered up for order.
The Sony Xperia Z Ultra is the largest of Phablet displays on the market, besting the most famous Phablet, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 by 7/10’s of an inch! The Xperia Z Ultra is only 6/10’s of an inch smaller than the very popular 7-inch tablet…truly breaking the barrier between phone and tablet. It is definitely a niche market, but one that many people are very comfortable in, I know I am. With its waterproof certification it makes it the thinnest IP certified handset, in addition to being the slimmest one with a Full HD display. The rest of the specifications are full flagship phone quality:
- 6.4″ TFT 1920 x 1080 resolution
- Qualcomm 800 Quad-Core 2.2GHz Processor
- 2GB RAM
- 16GB Internal Memory
- MicroSD support for up to 64GB
- 8MP Camera with 16X Digital Zoom and Auto Focus, No Flash
- 2MP 1080p Front Facing Camera
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, DLNA, GPS, NFC
- 3000mAh Battery
- HSPA+, GSM, LTE (different models)
- 179 x 92 x 6.5 mm – 212g
- Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
The Xperia Z Ultra is Sony’s first real attempt in the Phablet category and it seems as though they have held nothing back, except, strangely, a flash. With the Z Ultra Sony give us the largest screen on a smartphone (see comparisons below), flagship specifications, and waterproofing, all in one package. Though not having a dedicated S-Pen like Samsung’s Note series, you can write on the Z Ultra’s screen with any pencil, pen, or stylus.
If you are in the market for a Phablet, and you do not mind the larger size and two-handed operation, you may want to check out the Xperia Z Ultra. Right now, it stands at the top of the Phablets, just waiting for its competition, which will soon be the Galaxy Note 3, though sporting “only” a 5-7-inch Full HD screen, it should give the Sony a run for its money.
Let us know what you think about the new Sony Xperia Z Ultra – will you be picking one up or will you wait for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
