HTC Woes Continues as First Quarterly Loss in Company History is Reported

This evening, HTC has released their unaudited earnings for the third quarter of 2013. The results are basically what HTC confirmed back in July. It’s losing money, and it’s losing it quickly. In fact, this quarter is the first profit loss in company history, which is a pretty big deal. The past few quarters they managed to sneak in a little bit of a profit, but not much. This time they made a net loss of NT$2.97 billion, which works out to be about $101 million USD on revenue of NT$47.05 billion, about $1.6 billion USD. The operating loss was NT$3.50 billion, which is around $119 million USD.

HTC is really on a downward slope, and as much as I love HTC and their devices, they gotta make some big changes and make them fast. Just yesterday we posted an article about how HTC has lost about 90% of their market value in just 2 years. That’s pretty crazy. Even RIM/Blackberry and Nokia didn’t tank that quickly. Let’s face it, many of us would hate to lose HTC as an Android OEM even if you aren’t an HTC fan. Why? One word. Competition. At this rate Samsung is running all the competition out of business. Which is both good and bad for Samsung and their fans. It’s bad because Samsung will start doing more upgrades like the iPhone. Many people have complained about how small of an upgrade the Galaxy S4 was over the Galaxy S3. Well that will continue if more OEMs are driven out of business.

The HTC One has been selling well for HTC. But their problem is that they are relying on basically one flagship to keep them alive. That won’t work in this day and age. The HTC One Max that’s been rumored for months needs to be announced and launched ASAP. There’s a lot of people that would give that one a look, and if it’s as good as the HTC One, I think it would sell pretty well. Of course, not as well as the Galaxy Note 3.
