Before today, MMS for Google Voice really only worked with Sprint. In fact, Sprint was the carrier that played the nicest with Google Voice, making it almost a seamless transition. Now T-Mobile has added MMS support. Which means if you have a Google Voice number, you can now send MMS messages to T-Mobile users. Although who sends picture messages these days?
Google has already announced that MMS will hit Google Voice in early 2014, but today’s announcement is a small step towards MMS for Google Voice. Of course it’s still not quite seamless as you’ll get an email from the user with the picture instead of an actual message. Which kind of sucks, but at least its working now.
According to reports, it doesn’t seem to have any type of delay either, when sending MMS messages. Of course, this isn’t the best way or easiest way to get MMS working, but it does work. Hopefully there will be an easier way soon. Nice to see the two smaller carriers cooperating with Google and Google Voice. If only, AT&T and Verizon would be so cooperative.
Now that MMS is supported, that means you can receive MMS through Hangouts, which is definitely a nice addition. Hopefully the rest of us Google Voice users won’t need to wait too long for Google Voice to be completely integrated into Hangouts. Although Google said we’ll have it next year, but that is kind of a big time frame.
You can check out Alex Wiesen’s post on Google+ for more information regarding this change. He’s one of the Googlers working on the Google Voice project.
So there you have it. Working MMS for Google Voice with Sprint and T-Mobile. Two carriers down, two more to go. Unfortunately, the two that are left are the most stubborn. But hopefully they come around.
