Samsung has a distinct habit of including upgrades in both hardware and software with each rendition of its flagship Galaxy S series smartphone and then pass those traits, along with a few more to its Galaxy Note series smartphone. So in anticipation of the Galaxy S5, to be released this Spring, rumors and concepts are swirling around about what new features will be on the new S5. One such feature may be the ability to video chat too multiple people at a time – a sort of video conference call on your smartphone. Our friends at SamMobile got their hands on a document filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Rights (Korea’s version of the USPTO) showing the interface for such a feature.
The diagram above had actual pictures inserted from the sketch that was filed in Korea, but you can get a good idea of how it will work – much like a video chat on Hangouts, the person speaking is the larger picture, while the remaining people in the chat are smaller pictures across the bottom, but not speaking. To the right you can end the call, mute the call, go into a dual camera mode, and even switch the camera from the FFC to the main camera.
Whether this will be a part of the dialer or part of ChatOn, which would be my guest since it already has one-way video chat capabilities, we have no idea. Samsung is really pushing their ChatOn messaging system – I just received another update today – so it my guess that may be where we see it show up, although it may an option on the Galaxy S5, we just do not know at this time.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 will be one of the most anticipated devices in 2014, and yet little is known about it at this point. It may come with a 5-inch curved display, with a resolution up to 2560 x 1440. We are expecting up to a 16 megapixel rear-facing camera with 4K video capabilities and possible OIS, a 64-bit true octa-core processor, possibly an eye scanner, 4,000mAh battery, an improved speaker system, and Android 4.4 KitKat with a new version of TouchWiz. Talk is still circling about a metal chassis or frame, but Samsung may chose to redo the plastic back like they did with their Galaxy Note 3.
