Last year was the first year that Google really started selling their Nexus devices for dirt cheap. The Nexus 4 began at $299 for the 8GB model, at least in the US. The prices were almost the same elsewhere the Play Store was available. But we were seeing that carriers and LG in other countries and even here in the US were marking up the cost of the Nexus 4 significantly. In fact, T-Mobile had it priced around $500. That was probably so they could turn a profit on the Nexus 4.
Now it appears that we are seeing the same thing this year with the Nexus 5 in the UK. The Nexus 5 16GB is $349 in the US and £299 in the UK. This morning, Engadget had received an anonymous tip and found out that both O2 and Three had been marking up the price of the Nexus 5 to have a profit off of the device. Three is selling the 16GB Nexus 5 for £399, which is £100 more than the Play Store. On the other side, O2 is selling the 32GB Nexus 5 for £549, which is also quite a bit higher than the Play Store. But here’s some good news, if you were unable to grab a Nexus 5 from Google Play, since it’s now sold out. Carphone Warehouse is selling the NExus 5 16GB for just £295. That’s actually £4 cheaper than the Play Store.
For those that missed the announcement yesterday, you must be living under a rock. But the Nexus 5 is sporting a 4.95-inch display that is full HD, 1920×1080 resolution. It’s also featuring the Snapdragon 800 clocked at 2.3GHz, 2GB of RAM, 8MP camera on the back with OIS and a 1.3MP camera on the front. Powered by a 2300mAh battery and of course it’s running Android 4.4 – KitKat.
