Rumor: LG Wanted to Name the Nexus 5 the Nexus G – Trying to Be Like Samsung and the Nexus S?

For the most part, Google has stayed away from allowing the OEMs to brand the Nexus devices they’ve made. Although somehow Samsung’s Nexus smartphones did get branded. The Nexus S and the Galaxy Nexus would have been the Nexus 2 and Nexus 3. But other than that, every Nexus device has had a number. the Nexus One from HTC, the Nexus 4 and 5 from LG, then the Nexus 7 (2012) and Nexus 7 (2013) from ASUS, and the Nexus 10 from Samsung.

However, today there is a new report coming out of Chosun libo, which is a Korean newspaper, that’s reporting that LG wanted to name the Nexus 5 the Nexus G. Now this isn’t the first time we’ve heard this. Why Nexus G? Well LG G2, Optimus G Pro, etc. That is LG’s brand now, which they did drop the Optimus name from it recently. But on the other hand, it looks a lot like LG trying to follow in Samsung’s footsteps of branding everything, even the Nexus devices they’ve made. To me it wouldn’t have been a big deal, but it would be cool to laugh at everyone thinking the Nexus 5 name was confirmed, just like the Key Lime Pie name was confirmed and turned out to be KitKat.

It’s pretty obvious that Google decided not to go along with this idea, but it might have been kinda cool to see it named the Nexus G, and it would have definitely helped LG with their sales, although it’s not like they are hurting for sales right now. Their LG G2 is doing very well, and it’s one of the phones I recommend the most to people asking what phone they should get.

To me, I wouldn’t have cared what the name of the fifth generation Nexus would have been. As long as it was an awesome device at a killer price-point, which it still is. I kinda think a Nexus G name would be pretty sick. What do all of you think? Let us know in the comments down below.
