Verizon, always the carrier to put their customers first, revealed yesterday a plan to help out their many tablet and Samsung Galaxy Camera customers that are not on a data plan – ones that normally rely on Wi-Fi. You can now sign up for a daily type data plan – ala cart, if you will – for $5 a day (24 hour period) you can have access to 300MB of data. However, you can sign up for this on any day and as often as you would like. Verizon’s lowest individual monthly plan will cost you $20 a month for 1GB of data, so if you string together or use more than 3 days ($5 x 3 = $15) during the month, you could be better off signing up for the monthly plan…or certainly pay $10 and add the tablet to your Share Everything Plan. Nice idea, but still not quite as nice as T-Mobile’s solution of allowing their tablet owners 200MB FREE each month, and that is whether you buy the tablet from them or not!
Tablets continue to be a major force in the mobile world – Pew Research Center‘s studies show that if you are over 16 years old, there is a 35-percent chance that you own a tablet, which is up from 27-percent a year ago. While Verizon admits that many tablets owners chose to use free Wi-Fi, there may be times that they need that cellular connection for security purposes or if they happen to be in an area where Wi-Fi is just not available. For customers that need that spontaneous data, they will be able to access 300MB for the $5 a day fee, and the plan will last 24 hours or until the first 300MB of data is exhausted, whichever comes first. If they run out of data, they can immediately purchase another 300MB for an additional $5.
Let us know in the comments or on Google+ if you will be taking advantage of Verizon’s generosity and hooking up with their new $5 Daily Plan – I suppose for someone that only needs Verizon’s network occasionally would find this plan as a viable option, but if you are on Verizon’s network, I would imagine the $10 option to add your tablet to your Share Everything Plan would make a lot more sense, unless your tablet is near Wi-Fi all of the time.
