AH Awards 2013: Best Android News and Magazine App Of The Year

One of the great things about electronic and mobile media is the ability to keep on top of the news or latest articles in magazines, quickly and easily with either your smartphone or tablet. Most devices are starting to have their own built-in app for handling news feeds, such as HTC’s BlinkFeed and Samsung’s My Magazine – their versions of Flipboard. These apps are growing in numbers as people on the move do not have a lot of time to devote to the many sources of daily news. Again, we grabbed one of the more popular Magazine apps and the other is a newer News and Magazine app – let’s see which one wins our 2013 Award.

Runner Up – Flipboard: Your News Magazine

Flipboard is the app that started it all by bringing “together world news and social news in a beautiful magazine designed for your Android phone and tablet.”  The user starts by picking a few topics of interest and that starts building your Flipboard – where you can instantly flip through news stories or even stories and pictures that your friends chose to share.  The newest version, updated just December 10, allows you to save an article for reading later just by tapping the “plus” button.  You can access Twitter feeds, Financial Times, and USA Today, to name a few.  Social feeds allow you to see YouTube Videos, articles from Rolling Stone, or Facebook and Instagram – Flipboard is there to help simplify your life.

Winner – Google Play Newsstand

Google Play Newsstand was just released last month and had its latest update on December 11.  This newest magazine and news feed promises to be your “all-in-one” place – “one app and one tap” to go for Google Current subscriptions and Google Play Magazines.  Read Now is an area where you setup your favorite topics that you are most interest in reading about – and it will suggest new, but similar topics as well.  There are many different categories to choose from; Arts & Photography, Business & Finance, Food & Drink, and many more – simply subscribe to the different topics tagged to the articles that most interest you.  You can even go Offline with any news edition, topic, or magazine without ever missing a page.

You can read breaking news or in-depth articles that contain video, audio, and more, within the topics of sports, business, entertainment, fashion and more.  You can get both free and paid news subscriptions and even see and read full HD magazines, associated with hundreds of top-notch publishers.  Google Play Newsstand is exactly that, a full-fledged newsstand in electronic format that is easy to setup, easy to read, and easy to share articles with your friends.  Give it a try and I do not think you will be disappointed, and for that reason we chose it as Android Headline’s 2013 Award choice.
