AH Awards 2013: Best Android Sports App Of The Year

A must have app for every guy’s smartphone, and some girls, is some sort of sports app, and I do not mean you must have the NFL app or other game specific apps that might cost you so much per month…I’m talking about an app that can give you the scores, or recaps of the games. Even if you are not a jock (like me) or only slightly interested in sports, most people have a favorite home team that they like to follow and will carry an app that gives them the scores. Now some people eat, breath, and sleep sports, and that is okay because we have an app for that too.

Runner Up – NBA Gametime 2013-2014

If you are into professional basketball, then the official award-winning NBA Game Time 2013-2014 is definitely the app for you.  It has almost 33,500 reviews and almost 35,500 Google+s and over 1 million downloads and if you are “lucky” enough to have Sprint for your carrier, then you will receive FREE unlimited live coverage of every NBA game.  This app has it all – team rosters and stats, league leaders, and league news.  Included are team videos, press conferences, excitement notifications, Twitter streams for each game, highlights from around the league – a real play-by-play experience.  If you upgrade, you can watch live regular-season games via NBA League Pass Mobile.

Winner – ESPN SportsCenter

ESPN SportsCenter is the ideal app for those of us that want to keep in touch with our favorite teams, or delve in a little deeper and watch a GameCast for free…sure you are not watching a live game, but you can get live action on the screen in the form of graphics.  The app was updated a few days ago that gave it an entirely new look, but then it was updated again on December 11 to fix some bugs and to optimize the app.  SportsCenter has over 10 million downloads, over 295,000 reviews and over 71,000 Google+s.  While SportsCenter will certainly not replace a dedicated app for a specific sport that has live video, it is the best all-around app for the real sports buff or for an occasional “check the score” kind of person.

You can check instant scores and game updates, breaking news and analysis all from ESPN’s authoritative newsroom.  You are presented with dozens of notification options – set them for to remind you of kick-off or tip-off – notify you each time there is a score, or at the end of each period, quarter, or inning – breaking news – or even each time there is a substitution in the game.  You can look at all teams or just your favorite teams, and quickly add, edit, or remove teams.  There is deep Twitter integration for social sharing, rumors, and gossip. Let us know in the comments or on Google+ what is your favorite sports app.
