We wrote about the beta version of Koushik Dutta’s Allcast app last week, and that it would be available only until Dec. 1st when it would “self destruct”. Well, it’s Dec. 1st and it would seem that the .apk file download you could have previously picked up from koush’s personal G+ page has indeed self destructed but the good news is that it is now available in the Play Store for all to download for free.
As we previously reported, the Allcast Beta app doesn’t work with your chromecast anymore like it did in the beginning, but it does work with a whole slew of other products. If you own an Xbox 360 or Xbox One you can stream files from a number of places to either of those two consoles. You can also stream to the Roku box, Apple TV, Samsung Smart TV’s, Panasonic Smart TV’s, all or most DLNA devices, and WDTV’s. We know that the Chromecast is going to be alot of peoples favorite new streaming device and as well it should because its an awesome product, but you can still use the Allcast beta with lots of other stuff for local media streaming.
You can stream local media from your google drive, dropbox, DLNA servers and local gallery media.
The one catch to using this app is that you can’t go straight to the play store and download the app, and then begin streaming immediately. What you’ll have to do first is join the clockworkmod beta test community on google+, than you can register to be a beta tester for the app. Once you are all good to go on those two fronts, you should be able to download the app from the play store and use it. Its a pretty quick and painless little process to get everything going, seeing as how there is no waiting period to get into the community and signing up to be a tester is as simple as clicking the “become a tester” button. Remember that the app is in beta, so there may still be a few bugs here and there, and people may have varied results on the functionality or compatibility of the app. It seems to be working great for a lot of users though, so Happy Streaming!
