Android 4.4.2 Hits AOSP – Let the Custom ROMs Begin!

On Monday, we started seeing Android 4.4.2 rolling out to the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 2012/2013, and the Nexus 10. It took a little bit to get the factory images and binaries available, but those finally surfaced earlier today. Now the code is available in AOSP for Android 4.4.2. Which probably isn’t a big deal for most of you guys, but for those that flash or even build custom ROMs that’s a big deal. Because now you’ll be able to use the code from AOSP instead of the zip file from any of the Nexus devices.

AOSP is also updated to the latest tag which is android-4.4.2_r1, which also confirms that the build is KOT49H (updated from KOT49E on Android 4.4.1). The Android 4.4.2 release came within 4 days of Android 4.4.1 being released, and Google didn’t get a chance to push out the factory images or binaries or even push the code to AOSP for that update. So we’re skipping from Android 4.4 to Android 4.4.2 in AOSP. Which isn’t a big deal as we believe Android 4.4.2 is just a simple bug fix update. Seeing as the update is only 1.7MB in size, sounds about right, right?

We’ve actually already talked about what is new with Android 4.4.2, so we won’t go into detail about that here. But it’s a very minor update, and one we probably won’t care if we actually get it anytime soon, unless you’re on the Nexus 5. Then you may care. I’d expect to see Android 4.4.2 start making it into nightlies in the next few days for many popular ROMs like CyanogenMod, AOKP, Paranoid Android, OmniROM and many of the others out there.

For those interested in the source code, we’ve got the link below along with the link to the Android Building Google Group. How many of you are excited to see Android 4.4.2 start making it into your favorite custom ROMs very soon?
