Ok so Kit Kat has officially been out for almost a month for more than just the Nexus 5 and plenty of people are still wondering if their devices are going to make the list. We’ve done some of the hard work for you and made a list of devices that are scheduled to have the update or have already had it pushed out, and this is one list we’ve checked twice (if your device is on the naughty list it wont’ be getting kit kat) just for you so there’s no doubts. If you’re eagerly awaiting the update then you probably already know what kit kat brings to the table, but just in case we’ll go over it a little. There are of course some visual tweaks that we see, like the white theme throughout the phones UI and the transparent nav and status bar on the Nexus 5(Tip: you can get this look even if you don’t use a Nexus 5, so long as you install and use NOVA launcher with your 4.4 software) and some other minor things like the new app drawer button. Besides the visuals, kit kat devices support ART runtime and also have plenty of other under the hood features that improve the OS over version 4.3.
Ok enough babble, i’ll get straight to the point which is what you all wanted anyway isn’t it? Will your device be getting the update to Kit Kat? Was it pushed out already? We’ll go over which devices already run 4.4, which ones are confirmed to have the update and when they’re scheduled to roll out if it has been specified.
All Ready Have it
We’ll begin with the phones or devices that already have Kit Kat running on them, and we’ll go down the list according to manufacturer.
ASUS
The Nexus 7 (2012, and 2013 editions) started receiving the OTA update on or around November 12th, although it was different for everyone and some even got theirs just a couple of weeks ago.
HTC
The HTC One Google Play Edition had its 4.4 OTA update pushed out on or around November 25th, while the HTC One Developer Edition had its OTA update pushed out on or around November 29th.
LG
The Nexus 4 started getting its OTA update to 4.4 kit kat last month. The update is hitting devices in phases so if you haven’t gotten yours yet it’s just taking its time to get out to you. Be patient its coming, we promise.
Motorola
The Motorola Moto X started receiving its kit kat updates on November 19th. This began with the Verizon model Moto X, and then followed with the T-Mobile version on November 21st. At&t models began getting theirs on November 22nd. On December 4th, it was announced that testing for the US Celluar variant of the Moto X and 4.4 software was under way, and would begin rolling out in phases. Motorola has yet to announce anything on the update for any other models of the Moto X, and hasn’t mentioned which countries or carriers will be the next in line to get it.
Samsung
The rollout for 4.4 kit kat began with the Nexus 10 tablet, which started early in November. Most people started seeing updates later in the month. The Google play Edition of the Galaxy S 4 started receiving its OTA update November 25th.
Are Getting It
Next we’ll go over the list of devices that are expected to get the update to 4.4 kit kat as confirmation by the manufacturers and the carriers, and once again we’ll list them by manufacturer.
HTC
The Droid DNA is scheduled to get the update to 4.4 sometime in March of 2014, pending Verizon’s certification. This was stated on their twitter account.
The HTC One Max is certainly scheduled to receive the 4.4 update, but HTC says that it won’t start the rollout for the Max until its finished updating the HTC One.
Own a HTC One Mini? Good news is that it’s definitely scheduled to get the 4.4 kit kat update just like both its bigger brothers, but just the same as the Max, the Mini will start to receive updates after the Original HTC One is finished.
Huawei
The Huawei Ascend P6 is on the list of scheduled updates. So when can you expect to see kit kat rolling out to your device? According to weibo.com, Huawei plans to skip 4.3 entirely and jump directly to 4.4 which could occur by the end of this coming January.
Motorola
There is a large list of Moto devices that are on target to get the update to android 4.4, most of which are listed on their official software support site. There is no mention of timing on any of them with exception of the Moto G, which will either come pre-installed with Android 4.4 baked in or receive the update by the end of January. If you’re a Motorola user, here’s the list.
Motorola Atrix HD, Motorola Droid Maxx, Motorola Droid Mini, Motorola Droid Razr HD, Motorola Droid Razr HD Developer Edition, Motorola Droid Razr M, Motorola Droid Razr M Developer Edition, Motorola Droid Razr Maxx HD, Motorola Droid Ultra, Motorola Electrify M, Motorola Moto X Developer Edition. There you have it. A fairly large list of Motorola phones are scheduled to get updates to kit kat. Sadly there is no time frame on most of them.
Sony
Sony has taken the same route as Motorola in that they posted their confirmation about the devices which will receive the updates to 4.4, just without a mention of when. All of this information can be found on the Official Sony Blog. Here’s the list(it’s a short one, but thankfully Sony still has some devices that are confirmed). The Sony Xperia Tablet Z(will be in the first wave of devices to get 4.4), Sony Xperia Z, Sony Xperia Z1, Sony Xperia ZL, and the Sony Xperia Z Ultra.
Not Getting it?
Now the dreaded list of devices that have been confirmed not to receive the Android 4.4 kit kat update. If your device is on this list, we’re sorry.
Acer Android Tablets from 2012 and 2013. As Acer plans to rollout new tablets with kit kat for next year, tablets from the previous two years will not be receiving any updates to kit kat. Incremental updates for bug fixes or improvements will continue.
The Galaxy Nexus has finally met its official update demise with Jelly Bean. Although this is a sad moment for all of us and mostly everyone still on the device, no official update doesn’t mean you can’t still get kit kat unofficially. Many developers will be working on kit kat based ROMs for the device.
The next group of devices is from Motorola, and will not be getting the updates to Android 4.4 kit kat, as stated on the official support page. The Motorola Droid 4, Droid Bionic, original Droid Razr, original Droid Razr Maxx, Electrify 2, and Atrix HD Developer Edition.
That’s it for devices that either already started getting their updates, are confirmed to get them, or won’t be getting them. If you didn’t see your device on this list, just like it was stated above that doesn’t mean you can’t get Android 4.4 kit kat on your device. There will be many phones and tablets that are still going to be supported by developers and will be able to get kit kat via a ROM. There is also still the possibility that your device will get it officially as many manufacturers and carriers might still make an announcement in the future. We’ll keep you posted when and if more devices are confirmed to get the updates.
It is worth noting that some companies like Samsung and LG plan to announce information in the near future about which devices will be getting updates to Android 4.4. ASUS on the other hand has at least confirmed that they will be announcing which of their devices are to receive kit kat in the coming weeks. ASUS is usually pretty good about updates to their devices, so if you’re an ASUS device owner don’t count yourselves out just yet. If you have an older device, you more than likely won’t get any official updates to Android 4.4, in which case you might just want to keep an eye out within the developer community for a supported kit kat based ROM.
