There are certain basic tasks which an Android user finds excruciatingly painful to perform – one of which is the side-loading of APKs. If you want to install an application through side-loading (or using the adb command), you need to open a command window on your PC, navigate to the location where you have saved your Android directory with the necessary files, type the command adb install followed by the entire name of the apk file and then press enter. After such a cumbersome activity, your first app starts installing.
However, tools are available which ease processes such as this and make life much simpler for everybody. A new tool on the block comes from XDA Developers, where a forum member – Youssef Badr – has created the Android World Multitool. The application is currently Windows-only and needs to be installed in the C: drive itself. Installing the app elsewhere will result in errors – something which the developer aims resolving in future iterations.
The Android World Multitool is capable of performing some of the most common operations like installing an application through side-loading, flashing a boot animation, and rebooting your device. It even supports unrooting and backup/restore. Some features are limited to Samsung devices only, which can enter into the Download Mode or reboot into recovery.
The application does give the feeling that it is capable of much more, and we believe the developer will be adding more features in upcoming iterations. However, in its current avatar, the application is sufficient to be used by Android users who are just starting out in the minefield of custom ROMs and side-loading of apps.
For the uninitiated, sideloading of an apk implies that you use another source instead of the Google Play Store to download apps. Instead you use an apk file and install it directly. It must be noted though that we in no way would encourage you to side-load apps, or modify your phone is any which way. That is a choice which rests with you as the owner of your device.
