CyanogenMod has some big news this evening. They’ve just announced, via a blog post, that they are rolling out the first monthly snapshot for CM 11.0. Which is based on Android 4.4 KitKat. And this comes just days after they started rolling out CM 10.2.0 which was their first completely stable build of Android 4.3. CyanogenMod 11 M1 will be available for all Nexus devices that are actively supported in AOSP. Which means the Nexus 4, 5, 7, and 10. That does include all variants of the Nexus 7 as well.
Normally, CyanogenMod would start with their CM 11 nightlies right now. But instead they are starting with just the Nexus devices. And since they are AOSP-supported devices, they should have pretty much no hardware-specific issues. Of course they’ve also tested those devices, to make sure they work properly. If there are bugs, they’d be centered around CM issues. But with the nightlies, CM is going to allow you to submit bug reports to help get these bugs straightened out sooner. And by acknowledging them sooner, the entire CM11 roster will benefit.
CyanogenMod is going to be turning on CM11 nightlies for non-Nexus devices. As the device tree’s for these other devices are brought up by our team, it stands to reason there may be other issues that are yet to be discovered. They will be monitoring nightly usage and issues, and use that info to move towards adding mroe devices to the M1/M2 list and the eventual 11.0 release.
They are also working on getting Android 4.4.1’s code into the codebase, since it is now in AOSP. So CM11 M1 is already chugging along.
