Everybody was expecting Google to announce their new operating system, Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, but they surprised us with yet another delicious dessert…Android 4.4 KitKat. What was even more surprising was that it was tied in with Nestle and the actual KitKat candy bar, and what was even more shocking was that both Google and Nestle were able to keep this all under the “wrapper,” so to speak. This was a totally delicious surprise for all and Google was able to tie this nicely into promos and even a contest where they gave away thousands of Nexus 7 tablets to celebrate. Nestles was also happy as sales of their popular KitKat bar went through the roof as excited techies went out to buy the specially marked KitKat bars to not only enter the contest and to eat the delicious candy, but also to keep as a “collectible.” Below is the original video showing the contest setup:
However, the citizens of India received another surprise when their Nexus 7s were delivered – they were last year’s 2012 model, not the newer 2013 model promised in the advertisement listed above. They were rightly outraged and the social media channels exploded with their dissatisfaction. Some people said they should be happy just to receive a free Nexus tablet, period, however, the contest clearly indicated that the prize was the newest Nexus 7 (2013) and everybody in the U.S. received the newer tablet – the Indians were insulted by this gesture, and rightly so.
It looks like their public outcry against both Google and Nestle paid off as a couple of Android Police readers sent in this Facebook response from Nestles, and it appears that they will be righting this wrong:
It is a shame it took the cry of the people to get this situation corrected, but it is also nice to see that Nestles is stepping up to the plate to correct the error. Nestles received a lot of good publicity from this contest and it would be a shame to ruin it by sending out the older Nexus 7s.
Let us know in the comments and on Google+ how you would have reacted if you were sent last year’s Nexus 7 rather than the newest one advertised in the contest. Do you think they should have settled for the original Nexus 7 and just be happy they got a free gift or would you have fought for the 2013 version?
