According to Droid-Life, a few of their readers were reporting that the update to Android 4.4.2 KitKat on their Droid Maxx and Droid Ultra was bricking the device. It now appears that the update may have been pulled. The update first started rolling out on December 19th. Initially some readers said they had received the update that day, but it appears as it Motorola and Verizon have now pulled the update due to some pretty serious issues. Which is kind of surprising, based on how much Verizon supposedly tests these updates before they push them out. There’s no official word from either Verizon or Motorola on the pulled update. But I’m assuming it’ll be rolling back out in no-time once Verizon and Motorola fix the bugs that are plaguing these devices.
Droid-Life is also saying that a handful of their readers reached out to them over the weekend to state that the update did indeed completely brick their device. They also pointed over to Motorola’s forums, where quite a few others experienced similar problems. Motorola hasn’t fully acknowledged the problem as being widespread, but they are working with members of their feedback network to hopefully get the situation sorted out quickly.
While Verizon did say the update was rolling out beginning December 19th, it does usually roll out in phases. Which means that first phase could have been to soak testers, and Motorola found out that there was a huge problem that they needed to fix, and has put a hold on the roll out. And folks, this is why we have slow roll outs and soak tests. Because not every phone is the same, some people may have problems and others may not. Hopefully we’ll see it hitting more devices very soon.
