Ever since launching the Moto X, Motorola has shaken up things more than we could have imagined, simply because they’ve been doing things no other Android manufacturer has done yet. While many Android manufacturers rely on pure specs and a long list of features that their newest flagship phone has over others on the market, Motorola has been intelligently designing elements from within the OS to be updated without the need to send out big carrier-approved updates, which can take months to finally get pushed through. While some other phones are just now getting their Android 4.3 updates, and others are still languishing away on Android 4.1, Motorola pushed out the Android 4.4 KitKat update for the Moto X just weeks after KitKat was announced, and even before Google got the update out for the Nexus 4. Besides quick operating system updates, Motorola has been making a number of the unique features of the Moto X modular by placing them directly on the Google Play Store, which means that Motorola can update nearly every facet of the phone individually, and most importantly outside of the influence of those pesky US carriers.
Today’s new release of Active Display on the Play Store continues this trend and allows Motorola to fix bugs and give you new features as soon as they are ready, not when your carrier feels like approving them. The new Active Display update brings about performance improvements since the KitKat update went live. Some people reported a slight lag when unlocking the phone through Active Display to go straight to a notification after the KitKat update, and this Active Display update fixes that. Further more Motorola can now update Active display to have more features from now on through the Play Store.
Today also marks the launch of a new boot animation for the Moto X, which was actually launched at the end of last week for the Moto G. The update is a silent one and should have happened in the background, and appears to change when the date hits December 10th, which will be tomorrow if you weren’t keeping track. Motorola changed the Summery-feeling boot animation that shipped with the Moto X to a nice holiday/Christmas winter boot animation. Nothing like being festive around the holidays, and this kind of customization is one of the many things that makes Android so great after all. If you’ve already got a Moto X, go ahead and restart the phone to see if you’ve received the update, otherwise wait until tomorrow if the timer hasn’t kicked in yet. As always have fun with the new stuff, and like always we will keep you updated on Motorola’s next awesome move.
