The OUYA has arguably been one of the biggest let downs for hard-core Android and gaming fans. We were all pretty excited about it, since it’s a $99 gaming console. But it never really lived up to the hype. This afternoon, OUYA announced via Twitter that they are now accepting Bitcoin for payments. Their Tweet shows their order page, which has options for credit cards, Paypal and now Bitcoin. OUYA also confirmed via Twitter, that they can only process Bitcoin transactions for people buying a console, and not games – yet. “The Ouya Console store currently does not accept payment with Bitcoins for paid games.”
For those that are unaware, Bitcoin is an open source, peer-t0-peer electronic currency network that utilizes cryptography to complete and secure monetary transactions. Bitcoins generally are tied a generated address that can be stored on users hardware, in online services or as printed paper notices. It’s a really interesting currency, but it makes you wonder, do we really care that we can buy an OUYA console with bitcoin? Sure it’s another way of paying for it, but do enough people have bitcoin to do this? Will be interesting to see.
As far as I’m aware, OUYA is the only one accepting Bitcoin for payments. So hopefully they are the first of many more that will start to support it. Right now bitcoin is still pretty young, so adoption is going to be pretty slow. But hopefully we learn more about it very soon.
How many of you have bought some bitcoin? If you have, would you use it to buy an OUYA? Has anyone even thought about buying an OUYA? It seems like they haven’t sold many so far. Let us know in the comments down below.
