Rumor: Is Google Planning to make a Car-Connectivity Announcement at CES in January?

Google is always trying out new stuff. In fact, Android began as just an experiment. We’ve already seen self-driving cars from Google as well as many other companies. Now it according to the Car Connectivity Consortium, it looks like Google is planning to have a major car-connectivity announcement at CES. Right now the standard technology is MirrorLink which is a mature technology and is already in more than 500 products which include headsets, and head units . Toyota had announced it’s second MirrorLink-enabled car in Europe, which is the 2014 Verso. It also sounds like we’re going to see more MirrorLink announcements from key automakers and smartphone vendors very soon.

Most importantly, MirrorLink is open, so any car or phone manufacturer can join and implement it. And about 80% of car makers have already done so. MirrorLink is also OS-agnostic, and consumer-friendly. What that means is that with MirrorLink your car will work with any phone, and any car will work with your phone. Sounds pretty good to me.

It’s interesting to hear that Google is planning some car-connected stuff and to announce it at CES which is only a couple of weeks away. CES starts on January 7th, although the Press day is on January 6th, which will be the busiest day for us. Hopefully we’ll hear more about this from Google at CES in just a couple weeks. But it definitely sounds interesting, and might even be their next moonshot.

Remember that this is a rumor, so we’ll have to take it with a grain of salt for now. But it seems like it’s pretty true. Especially compared to some of the other rumors we’ve seen in the past. Even the past week. Be sure to let us know what you think about this in the comments down below.
