Let’s face it, the microSD card is on its way out. Sure, Samsung and even Sony are keeping the standard alive but, with many phones shipping with either 16GB or 32GB and a lot of cloud options, the need for such expansion is waning. Of course, sending files back and forth from our phones to our computers and vice-versa can still be a little tricky. This latest little gizmo from Sony solves two problems in one, offering users extra storage to simply plug into their Android smartphones and a full-size USB port allowing you to take data from your laptop or PC with you and access it from your smartphone.
We’re pretty certain that this is Sony’s way of updating the USB memory stick to work nicely with smartphones and tablets but, you can of course use this as expandable storage for your Android device as well. For those looking to get some more room on their Android device, they’ll need to use Sony’s special app with these and of course, be running Android 4.0.3 or above. There are 8GB, 16GB and 32GB varieties available, coming in at $19.99, $29.99 and $62.99, respectively. Obviously, the 32GB model is a little expensive but, we’re thinking that Sony isn’t expecting to sell a huge bunch of these.
No matter what though, this is an innovative approach from Sony, the 8 and 16GB versions are somewhat affordable and they serve a dual-purpose. You can attach them to your keys as a memory stick and also use them with your smartphone. Someone like me for instance, might put a lot of movies on there, along with some important files but, how you use such a thing is really up to you.
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to get your hands on these as last-minute Christmas presents, as UberGizmo is reporting that these are slated for a January 2014 launch.
