Sony has always worked pretty closely with Google. In fact they have AOSP ROMs for many of their flagship devices and even tell you how to flash them. Now, we all had hoped that when the Xperia Z Ultra was announced earlier this year that we’d see a Google Play Edition version of the device, and here it is. Launching today, is the Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition, and it’s $649. Keeping the same specs as the Xperia Z Ultra, and the water resistant body, it’s definitely a great buy.
The Xperia Z Ultra features a 6.4-inch 1080p display, which gives you a 342ppi. It’s also sporting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core 2.3GHz processor inside with 2GB of RAM. It’s also got a 8MP camera on the back with a 2MP shooter on the front. It weighs in at about 212g and dimensions are 179 x 92 x 6.5mm. It is running stock KitKat, Android 4.4. But it is not using the Google Play Experience launcher which is found on the Nexus 5, unfortunately.
The Xperia Z Ultra is unlocked and contract free just like every other Google Play Edition device out there. It’s sporting the Snapdragon 800 processor inside, which means it’s a beast. I’ve also heard that the battery life is pretty good. We haven’t gotten to review it yet, since Sony isn’t really focusing on the US market right now. Hopefully we’ll get to review these Google Play Edition devices announced today. Google also announced the LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition which is shipping today. Both are quoted on Google Play as having 1-2 business days for shipping, and also has free ground shipping for a limited time.
So for all of you waiting on a Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition, here you go. It’ll cost you $649 + tax of course. It also looks like it’s only available in the US again.
