The HTC One has already begun getting Android 4.4 – KitKat, at least the unlocked and developer editions. While the carrier versions still need to get certified. Now we’re learning from one of our favorite HTC leakers @LlabTooFeR that HTC’s One Max and Mini as well as the One Dual SIM will get the Android 4.4.2 update in “time frame January-February”. That’s actually not bad, considering they are getting the update after the HTC One. It’ll still probably be the second manufacturer to update their devices, behind Motorola of course. Yes KitKat was released on October 31st, so that would be four months later. But if you compare this to updates in the past, it’s still quite quick. Especially for HTC. Who used to be very slow, like the other OEMs at updating their devices.
The update is said to bring along the Sense 5.5 UI which is already present on the HTC One Max. So it would only really affect the HTC One Mini and the Dual SIM HTC One. As far as Sense 6.0 goes, we’ll probably see that after the HTC One’s successor is announced, which we’re expecting to happen within the next couple of months. @LlabTooFeR also says that we may have to wait until “late Autumn” to get Sense 6.0 on the HTC One Max and Mini, and possibly even the HTC One.
It’s great to see HTC getting out updates quicker, and it’s even better to see they aren’t the only ones doing it. Hopefully we see more OEMs pushing out KitKat rather soon. We know that Samsung isn’t slated to start pushing it out until February or March or even later. That’s probably to do with building Touchwiz on top of KitKat, which does take a while. Which is one of the reasons why I love stock Android. Much easier to get the latest version of Android on there.
