We know Android is growing like crazy, and taking over the world. But just how fast is it growing? Well despite having more than three quarters of the market, Android grew at its slowest rate yet. Which is actually expected. Android now has a 78.9% market share, and when you get that high, it’s hard to keep growing in huge numbers.
According to Strategy Analytics, they say a record 781.2 million smartphones with Android on-board were shipped globally in 2013. With a total of 990 million smartphones being shipped globally. Looking at the table above. There are some pretty surprising numbers actually. Over 227 million smartphones were shipped with Android on them in Q4, compared to 152.5 million the year before. Which is a nice change. With the yearly amount almost doubling. 481.5 million in 2012, and 781.2 million in 2013. But what is the most interesting to me is the number of Windows Phones that were shipped. In 2012, only 18.8 million were shipped, however in 2013 it was around 35.7 million. Which doesn’t seem like a huge jump, but for someone like Microsoft it is. Especially when only one manufacturer is really building phones running your OS.
So as of right now we’ve got Android at 78.9% market share, iOS at 15.5%, Microsoft at 3.6% and all the others at 2%. Which the others include the likes of Blackberry, WebOS, Symbian and others. Simply because not everyone upgrades their phones as often as most of us do. The numbers between Q4 2012, and Q4 2013 went down for both iOS and others, and it was similar for all of 2012 and 2013. So maybe Donald Trump was right, and that Apple should look at building a larger iPhone as an option in 2014? Since Apple did sell 51 million iPhones in Q4, but only grabbed a 17.6% market share in Q4. It’ll be interesting to see if they change anything this year.
