We knew that dual-boot devices would be making their way to CES this year, but we were surprised when Engadget revealed to us today that Micromax would be one of the first manufacturers to make an announcement about a dual-boot laptop – called LapTab. It runs both Android Jelly Bean and Windows 8.1, giving you the option of running whatever Operating System you either want or need to run for your particular applications.
Most people who have heard of India’s Micromax, are probably the citizens of that great country, although they are the number two manufacturer of smartphones in their country, and they also sell HDTV’s and tablets. You may also have caught our story on their low-cost Canvas HD headsets that were release about a year ago. The A116 Canvas HD retailed for about US$260 with a 5-inch 720p display, 8MP camera, 1GB of RAM, and a quad-core processor and Android 4.1.2. This device sold out in a matter of hours in India and made one wondered whether they would ever make it to the U.S. – and one interesting twist was that the company used Hugh Jackman as their spokesperson.
The LapTab has a 10.1-inch display and a 1280 x 800 resolution, with both front and rear facing cameras of only 2MP – making it ideal for video chatting and selfies, but certainly will never replace your smartphone or dedicated camera for your precious photo shots. Running the whole show is an unspecified ATOM processor clocked at 1.46GHz, with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in storage.
The LapTab should go on sale next month and will come with a wireless keyboard – although no price has yet been announced. If Micromax follows their usual path in offering a lot of value in their products, this could be a very affordable, and therefore attractive product. There is also no word on whether this device will ever leave India, but it could be a great way to try out the dual-boot product.
Let us know on our Google+ Page if Micromax is a product that you would like to see come to the U.S., as they try to globally expand or, if you live in India, are you interested in exploring a dual-boot device.
