There is a glut of Bluetooth wireless speakers available, some of them great, some of them not so great. As an avid music fan and full-time metal head, I’m always on the hunt for a great wireless speaker to use with my phone and my Google Play Music All Access subscription. When I have a chance to review a wireless speaker, I jump on it. Today we’re going to take a look at the Kitsound Boombar Wireless Speaker. It’s priced to sell, and while it’s not the best speaker I’ve ever used, it’s not the worst by far. Let’s jump right in. The Kitsound Boombar Speaker is a lightweight, portable speaker with a built-in microphone, rechargeable battery, and working range of up to 30 feet. The speaker comes with a well-made, padded carrying case that makes it very easy to travel with it. The speaker can be used wirelessly using your device’s Bluetooth connection, but it also comes with a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable that will let you use the speaker on a wired connection. Having both options is great because you may not want to always use your device’s battery draining Bluetooth connection. Bluetooth Low Energy helps that some, but if you’re using an older smartphone or tablet, or even your laptop, that could still be an issue. Kitsound also includes a plastic stand and charging cable with the speaker.
The design of the Boombar speaker is sleek and it’s small enough to easily travel with. The built-in microphone is a nice touch as it allows you to take phone calls on the device without disconnecting it from your phone. The speaker can be used on battery power or on A/C power. The battery is rated for up to 10 hours of playing time, and that’s about what I got out of it. This is one of those rare times when the battery life of a device actually matches what the stated manufacturer rating. It was a pleasant surprise. The stand that’s built in to the back of the speaker is ingenious, too. The stand is actually just a small slot cut into the back of the device. Kitsound includes a small circular disc that can be placed in to the slot to stand the speaker up. The instructions that come with the speaker suggest using a coin if you don’t have the plastic disc, which I thought was very smart. So how does the Boombar speaker sound? The sound is the most important part, right? You’re not going to be blown away by the sound quality on this wireless speaker. It’s also not terrible. The volume was loud enough, but when cranked all the way up it does distort slightly. There’s enough low-end for most people, which is something that a lot of small speakers struggle with. I can’t say that the overall sound quality was excellent, just that it is good enough. When you consider that the Kitsound Boombar speaker can be yours for around $50, that’s about what you would expect.
This speaker is a good deal, and the overall performance is more than adequate. For the price that you’ll pay to pick up this wireless speaker, it’s a great option. The sound quality is good, if not great. The battery recharges in about 3 hours and will get you a good 8-10 hours of use before you have to charge it again. The carrying case and the built-in stand are added bonuses that you may not find in other wireless speaker options.
