Google Acquires Bitspin, Makers of Timely – All In-App Purchases are Now Free!

Here’s something interesting going down this weekend. It’s being reported today, that Google has just acquired Bitspin. Which most you may not have heard of, I know I hadn’t, but they are the developers behind Timely. You know that nice looking clock app that has In-App Purchases, and allows you to share stuff to social media sites to unlock certain things. While most of us view that as spam. It’s actually a genius way to get publicity for an app.

Right now, it’s not clear whether Google has bought the entire company, or has just hired their Zurich-based development team. But obviously, Google is going to benefit from this purchase, since their interface on Timely is pretty impressive. So far Google has not commented on the acquisition yet.

Bitspin put out a post this morning regarding the acquisition, and it appears that Timely will still be available on the Play Store, but it is unlikely to receive any major feature updates afterwards. Prior too, content was locked down behind in-app purchases, including extra themes, sounds and challenges. All of which are now free. Bitspin is also the team behind Tasks, which is one of my favorite Google Tasks apps. We don’t really know why Google purchased Bitspin, but we’re pretty sure it has something to do with their excellent visual design. Google hasn’t done a whole lot with their Clock app, although they have redesigned it in Android 4.2 and 4.4. As well as when they introduced Holo back in Ice Cream Sandwich. It’s rather minimal, but it does look nice. Although I’d love to see Timely become the stock Clock app in Stock Android? How about the rest of you?

How many of you are surprised to see Google purchase Bitspin? Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below.
