Google’s recent sale of Motorola has kind of confused all of us. Is they basically bought Nest and sold off Motorola. Making Nest their primary hardware guys. Google also recently purchased Deep Mind Technologies for a little over half a billion. Now Google already has a wearable product, although it’s not particularly consumer friendly. Glass is their first wearable, and I’d say they beat most of their competitors even hardware partners into the wearable space. Now according to The Information, it appears that wearables are next on Google’s shopping list.
Word on the street is that once the Motorola sale is final, Google will be using Nest as their gadget hardware team, and then moving onto buying some more wearable tech companies. Sources of The Information are saying that Google’s CEO Larry Page is “serious about making a move”, in the wearable tech industry. After announcing the sale of Motorola Mobility over to Lenovo on Wednesday, Google reaffirmed their dedication to wearables and Glass during their earnings call on Thursday. Where they informed everyone they made over $16 billion in revenue last quarter. Also, remember that the Project Ara team from Motorola is sticking with Google after the sale to Lenovo. Which is another hint that Google is serious about wearables and the future.
We’ve also seen numerous rumors of Google working on a smartwatch, which wouldn’t really be surprising. Especially since just about every tech company out there is working on their own smartwatch. And some have already put theirs out, like Samsung and Sony. Even Motorola put one out before Google purchased them, the Moto ACTV. So what kind of wearable companies are Larry Page and the rest of Google eyeing? Who knows. But one company I’m sure is on their list is Pebble. As they’ve been pretty popular lately, especially with Pebble Steel.
