Samsung established dominance in the phablet market with its Galaxy Note line up, so naturally, we’ve been seeing plenty of developers come forward with their own oversized smartphones to challenge Samsung for the throne. The latest to do so is Chinese manufacturer Mlais, which made its new MX65 smartphone official today. The Mlais MX65 comes equipped with a 6.5-inch screen sporting 1080p resolution, and judging from the picture above, the device is quite similar to the Galaxy Note 3 in terms of aesthetics.
From a hardware standpoint, the main similarity is that the Galaxy Note 3 and the Mlais MX65 both feature octa-core processors. Specifically, the one used in the MX65 is a 1.7GHz MediaTek MT6592, and it will be working in tandem with 2GB of RAM. This is where the Mlais MX65 begins to break away from the Galaxy Note 3 in terms of specifications, as Samsung’s contender comes with 3GB of RAM. Just as well, the MX65 has 16GB of internal storage (expandable through microSD), which is a fair amount less than the Note 3’s 32GB or 64GB offerings.
The MX65 will come running Android, but at this point in time, we’re not sure just which version it will run out of the box. While we’ll need to wait for official word from Mlias to be sure, it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to expect something like Jelly Bean instead of Android 4.4 Kit Kat. It also features dual-SIM functionality and comes packed with a 3,800mAh battery. Finally, potential customers can look forward to a 13MP camera on the rear side of the device and a 5MP camera around the front.
The MX65 will be available in black or white and comes with a price tag of RMB $1,699, which sits right around $280. Not bad for a handset that seems to be directly competing with the Galaxy Note 3. The MX65 is the latest in a long line of octa-core devices to come out of China, but it’s only the third one we’ve seen from Mlias. While today’s announcement shared plenty of information about the device, there’s still a morsel or two left to find out, so stay tuned.
