In the open world of Android software and hardware, we have started to see the rise of gaming consolesthat are powered by Google’s open source operating system. As with all Android-powered devices, there is the possibility to gain root access to these consoles and to push them beyond what the manufacturer intended. Mad Catz’s MOJO gaming console is no different, and has recently been rooted, and can now access the Google Play store, along with thousands of other applications that would otherwise have been unavailable on the device. The root, called the MoDaCo Mod by Paul O’Brien, is simplistic enough, but carries all the normal risks of rooting. The process involves a USB Male A-A cable and a computer, but thankfully you can use Windows, a Mac, or a Linux. Of course, as with rooting, it may restrict the device’s ability to receive any future OTA updates. The steps are very simple. First, download the ‘Superbot MMM r2’ file located in the source link found at the bottom of this article. Extract the .zip file to any directory. Put the MOJO in bootloader mode by unplugging the power cable along with any USB cables and insert the Male A-A cable in the port labelled as ‘2.0’. An error message “Key driver not found. Booting OS” will display. For Windows, simply install the device drivers from the directory you extracted it to from above (if needed) and then run ‘superboot-windows.bat’ as Administrator. For Macs, open a terminal window to the directory containing the files and type in ‘chmod+x superboot-mac.sh’ followed by ‘sudo ./superboot-mac.sh’. For Linux, open terminal windows to the directories and type ‘chmod +x superboot-linux.sh’ followed by ‘sudo ./superboot-linux.sh’ After you follow one of the above methods, you will see ‘Booting downloaded image’ and a black screen on your MOJO, and then the ‘Key driver not found’ message from before will return. When this happens, you need to unplug the USB cable and power cable, wait a few moments (try slowly counting to 15) and then reconnect it all. Finally, after it boots, go to Settings>Applications and clear the data for the Play Store, reboot the device, and then open the Store to see all of the new apps that your device can download and use! You now have access to the thousands of apps that have made Google Play a force to be reckoned with, and can now use the game console for so much more.
