When the Moto G was announced late last year, we were all pretty amazed by what Motorola was able to do with a phone that they are selling for under $200. I mean if you take a look at other phones under $200, you’re probably not going to like what you see, especially if you’ve heard about the Moto G. The Moto G has a 4.5-inch 720p display, 1GB of RAM, 8GB or 16GB of internal storage, along with a 2070mAh battery inside. Which the battery lasts all day and then some. Not to mention, it’s pretty much stock Android so it’s very easy to update. In fact, Motorola just pushed out Android 4.4 KitKat to it a few weeks ago. Ahead of time, even. Which is nice to see from a manufacturer.
But now here comes the big news. “Why can’t these devices be $50?” asked Motorola’s CEO Dennis Woodside when he was speaking with TrustedReviews. “There’s no reason that can’t happen so we’re going to push that.”
Now we’ve been seeing the race to the bottom with tablets lately, and it appears that the same thing is about to happen with phones too. Especially after seeing Motorola put out the Moto G and seeing the reactions it got from many people. There are already companies like BLU who only focus on cheap, unlocked devices. But it would be great to get cheap, unlocked devices from larger OEMs like Motorola, who will actually update the devices.
Of course, Samsung has a ton of cheap Galaxy devices, but they aren’t really all that appealing. Especially when compared side-by-side to the Moto G. Which I think is where Motorola is really aiming. Is they are looking to have one flagship, and then a few low-end or cheap Android devices. Because not everyone is wanting to pay $400-600 for a new phone, especially if they don’t want a contract. It’s going to be an interesting year for Motorola.
