For a while, we’ve been hearing rumors of various manufacturers working with MediaTek and their new 8-core processing chip. MediaTek claims it’s a “true octa-core” and not just two quad-core processors like what Samsung has on their Exynos 5 Octa. We’ve heard MediaTek working with Huawei, ZTE and a couple other Chinese OEMs. But now it appears the rumor mill is name-dropping the HTC Desire now. According to GizChina, it appears that the two companies are going to have the HTC Desire with MediaTek’s new Octa-core processor inside. Which is said to be either a low-end or a mid-range device.
This HTC Desire is supposedly going to have a 5-inch 720p display. Which isn’t the best, but it’s certainly better than the other 5-inch or larger devices sporting a qHD display, like the Galaxy Mega 5.8. It’ll also sport 1.5GB of RAM, Android 4.3 along with Sense 5.5. Now I’d love to see it launch with KitKat, especially since it works on devices with as little as 512MB of RAM. But this is a mid-range or low-end device, so it may not be at the top of HTC’s list, even though it should be.
Granted these are only rumors. But we do know that HTC is struggling. That’s no secret. And right now the smartphone market in China is booming. So this could be HTC’s way of competing with the iPhone 5c over in China, to grab some more market share. So as usual, let’s take this with a grain of salt. As we do with all rumors. As we learn more, we’ll be sure to pass the details along to all of you.
It’s hard to imagine that a device with an 8-core processor is said to be “low-end” or “mid-range”. But this is a MediaTek chip, which is probably why. I’d certainly rather have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 over an octa-core MediaTek processor anyday. How about the rest of you.
