We’ve heard many people asking where the update to the Samsung Series 3 Chromebook is. You know the one running the Exynos 5 Dual-core 5250 processor. Well according to OMGChrome, it look like it’ll be out sometime this year. As there’s a leaked image, well a table, showing the specs for the 2012 version and the 2014 version. The 2014 Samsung Series 3 Chromebook is slated to sport an Exynos 5 Octa 5420 processor, with a Mali-T628 GPU, 3GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB of internal storage which is still an SSD, around 7 hours of battery, screen size slated at 12-inches or less. The Display resolution is going to be 2560×1600, that’s a 16:10 ratio, it’ll weigh about 1kg, and cost between $250 and $300 depending on the storage configuration.
That’s actually a pretty big upgrade over the 2012 Chromebook from Samsung. Although I’d love to see them put a Haswell chip in their Chromebook, I wasn’t expecting one. We’re just left wondering when it’ll be available? Since the Exynos 5 Octa 5420 is already available and in a few devices that Samsung makes. Obviously, it wasn’t announced at CES last week. Perhaps Samsung will show it off alongside the Galaxy S5 in Mid-March? Maybe not. It would be nice to have it announced then. There may or may not be an event for this Series 3 Chromebook. We’ll have to wait and see exactly when it becomes available. Hopefully we’ll have a touch screen on this one, but it’s unlikely if its resolution will indeed be 2560×1600, at least not at $250-300 price range.
I know plenty of you have been holding out for the next-generation Samsung Chromebook. It looks like its in the works and could be announced any day now. I’m really hoping it performs better than the 2012 Series 3 Chromebook did, but I’m not holding my hopes up because the Exynos 5 Octa 5420 is in the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition which has a 2560×1600 resolution display and it struggles to push all those pixels. So it’ll be interesting to see how well it works out.
