Samsung has already came out with a curved smartphone called the Galaxy Round, but the device was only sold in Korea. The Galaxy Round only sold 10,000 units in the first 40 days, but then it was well over $1,000. The concave display had its curve from left-to-right, and was very slight, but through testing it was learned that there was a true advantage when viewing the device, especially when it came to outside glare or reflections.
There have also been many rumors about the possibility of the new Galaxy S5, set to debut this Spring, coming with a curved display, but there have been just as many reports that the Galaxy S5’s display will be flat. However, there has been little talk of a curved screen going on a tablet, but according to MoviePlayer, that might be exacting what Samsung’s next 7-8-inch tablet, called the Samsung Galaxy Tab Round may possess.
Samsung filed patents in February 2013 and they were approved/granted in October that show a slightly curved screen that may be the makings of the Galaxy Tab Round. After selling over 40 million tablets in 2013, Samsung has made it quite clear that they intend to do whatever it takes to dominate the tablet field in 2014 and a curved display may just help them capture some more of that lucrative market.
The “round” on the larger tablet may really help with glare and reflection with more surface area, but it certainly would make writing or drawing on it near impossible, but then it is a Galaxy Tab, not a Galaxy Note, so it would not come with a S-Pen or stylus. It would allow somewhat more protection from damage as the curved displays are called “flexible,” so they do give some-what.
Samsung and the industry as a whole has a love affair, or at least a great curiosity, about curved displays, but they have always been on either a smaller device, like that found on a smartphone, or on a very large display, such as their curved 105-inch Ultra High Definition TV (UHD) that was debuted at CES this past week. It offers a movie theater aspect ratio of 21 x 9, and projects a panoramic image that has a truly cinematic quality, along with 3D effects and over 11 million pixels. So why not a tablet size, and if anybody would try that configuration, it would certainly be Samsung – always wanting to be the first in anything new that comes out in the market.
