On Thursday, Snapchat announced a new update to their Android application that brings changes to the “Find my Friends” part of the app. However, it could be too little too late. Some of you may have heard over New Years that 4.6 million users information that was stored in Snapchat’s database was leaked out. Today, they announced a functional change, and solution to this issue. Still showing very little regret for the leaking of 4.6 million users information last week, the company has announced that they are are now allowing users to unlink their mobile numbers from their account.
Snapchat posted on their blog, about their new policies going forward, and unlinking your phone number is pretty easy. If you are an existing user, you will want to jump into the settings then mobile number and you can easily delete it. If you’re a new user, you will be prompted to verify your phone number before you can use the Find My Friends feature within the application. The company is claiming to be continuing to work on their API to prevent any sort of event like this happening again to their vast group of users. But, as expected, that leak has a lot of people up in arms about Snapchat, and I’ve seen several people close their accounts because of it. So if you haven’t already deleted your account, be sure to unlink your phone number from your account, to keep from your phone number being leaked out again.
How many of you are still using Snapchat after that security breach? I’m still using it, at least for now. However, I’m not happy that all those mobile numbers were leaked out. Hopefully Snapchat is really working on fixes so that doesn’t happen again, as they are a very popular app on Android, and it would be a shame for that to be their demise.
