After having the device leaked and sent to the FCC. Sony has decided to go ahead and officially announce the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, WiFi Only version. As expected, there’s not a whole lot different here between this one and the original Xperia Z Ultra, aside from the lack of a cellular radio. The Xperia Z Ultra still has a 6.4-inch LCD display, Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.3GHz, 2GB of RAM and a 3000mAh battery. It’s also the thinnest device, at just 6.5mm thin. There’s a 8MP camera on the back, with Android 4.2 – Jelly Bean on board.
The Xperia Z Ultra WiFi only model is still dust-proof and water-resistant. Up to IP5X, which is pretty good, although the new Xperia Z1s is even better. For those that are looking to pick up the Xperia Z Ultra as a tablet, I’d recommend you picking up the Google Play Edition from Google Play, of course that only applies if you’re in the US, because it’s essentially the same device, but it’s running Android 4.4 instead of 4.2. It’ll also get faster updates, which is always a nice thing.
Sony is selling the Xperia Z Ultra WiFi model in Japan this week for ¥52,000 which is about $499 USD with today’s exchange rate. There’s no word on when it will be heading to the rest of the world, but I’m sure it’ll be launching in North America and Europe rather soon. At least where the Xperia Z Ultra is already available. Right now, those in the US can only pick up a Xperia Z Ultra with LTE, which is available from both Sony, and Amazon, along with Google Play for the Google Play Edition version.
