We haven’t been hearing much about the number three mobile carrier in the US, except for the fact that they want to buy out T-Mobile, who is ironically the only other carrier to offer unlimited talk, text, and data as a standard feature. It would seem that Sprint wants to stay more competitive with AT&T and Verizon (as they should) and are going to be releasing their own unlimited cloud storage through Pogoplug. Pogoplug is an online storage service that was designed specifically for the mobile user, allowing the user to ‘effectively extend the storage capacity of their mobile device.’ Starting today, January 27, 2014, Sprint’s smartphone customers will be able to download the Pogoplug app to their device, giving them direct access to the cloud storage system. All Sprint customers will be given 5GB of free storage, with the option to upgrade to unlimited storage for a fee of $4.99 per month.
This cloud service is just another in a very crowded field. With alternatives such as Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, and Box, there are many alternatives for the modern smartphone user to choose from. However, the appeal of Pogoplug is that not only do you get 5GB of data right off the bat, but you can also get unlimited data for effectively $60 a year. For people such as myself who do not use cloud storage that much, this would be a nice, comfortable amount to have, if only to transfer a file from your computer to your phone, or vice versa, without a cable. For the dedicated cloud user, the $4.99 a month service fee for unlimited storage does not seem like that bad of a deal. AT&T offers a similar service called AT&T Locker that, as far as I can tell, is capped at 5GB for free, not allowing any more storage options. Verizon offers Verizon Cloud, which also gives 5GB for free, but charges $2.99 per month for 25GB, $5.99 per month for 75GB, and finally $9.99 per month for 125GB. Basically, as far as charged cloud storage space goes in the mobile markets, Sprint is offering the best bang for your buck. What do you think? Will you Sprint subscribers be taking advantage of it?
