Tizen OS Release Delayed by Samsung Until At Least the Second Half of 2014

We brought you some news yesterday about an alternate, Linux-based OS in Jolla’s Sailfish. There are several other mobile operating systems in development by major OEMs. Some of them are closer to seeing a release date than others. Samsung’s Tizen is one of those, but we won’t be seeing an official Tizen release until at least the second half of 2014. Samsung had been planning on having the OS ready in the first half of 2014. An official at Samsung’s Media Solution Center said that that isn’t going to happen, though.

“It is true that the release has been delayed,” said one official at Samsung Electronics’ Media Solution Center. “Previously we did had planned to release in the first half of this year in several countries, including Korea and Russia.”

Samsung was expected to release the SC-03F as their first Tizen device. While the smartphone has actually been approved for sale in Japan already; it’s not going to come to market anytime soon. NTT DoCoMo is expected to carry the device. We don’t know a lot about the SC-03F yet. The device was supposed to be made announced on the 16th of January, but NTT DoCoMo pushed that date back without providing any details as to why. If Tizen is not ready for the consumer market yet, the first Tizen handset obviously isn’t ready yet either

All of these delays from Samsung concerning the Tizen OS don’t bode well for the mobile operating system. It’s been rumored that Samsung wants to make a break from Android and strictly use their own OS. They have a proprietary app market in place already as well as their own suite of apps that match those available from Google. They are going to have to get Tizen up and running properly before they can even think about making a break from Android. That is a long-term play, if that’s even the route Samsung decides to go.

The Tizen OS won’t be making an appearance in the U.S. anytime soon, even once it does land in Japan and other markets. Samsung has stated that they don’t plan on bringing Tizen to the States, at least for the time being.
