We’ve been hearing for a while now that Toshiba were about to enter the Chromebook market and it seems that CES 2014 is when they take wraps off of their Chromebook plans. Toshiba’s Chromebook hasn’t been a well-kept secret and in fact, folks such as PC Mag were kind enough to slip up on their embargo and let everyone in on the latest Chromebook. With more partners joining Google’s Chromebook cause, such as Lenovo and Dell, 2014 could see more Chromebooks hit the market than any other year previously.
While CES 2014 hasn’t officially kicked off, we’ve already heard quite a bit of exciting news from the likes of Nvidia and we’re sure to hear more from Samsung later on in the week. As for this latest Chromebook, things are much the same, apart from the overall size of the device. Coming in at 13.3-inches, the Toshiba Chromebook is a little bigger than both the Chromebook Pixel as well as Acer’s C720. The internals are pretty standard fare with Intel’s Celeron 2955U (of the Haswell variety), 2GB of RAM, an HDMI port, 2 USB 3.0 ports and an SD card reader.
As for the build of this guy, so far this is very much a plastic affair, with some rough texturing being used for parts of the laptop. While that’s a little off-putting, considering that Toshiba is said to be launching this for just $279, it’s not too bad of a deal. Especially when you put it side-by-side the HP Chromebook 11, which is very much underpowered in comparison to Toshiba’s offering.
The first open floor day of CES 2014 might be over and done with but, that doesn’t mean plenty of news won’t be coming out for some time to come. As 9to5Google has spotted, Toshiba’s display for their new Chromebook seems pretty prominent and we wouldn’t be surprised if the Japanese giant will be looking to Google’s Chrome OS to help them claw back some lost laptop sales.
