We previously saw hints of the Wifi only enabled version of the Sony Xperia Z Ultra pop up in antutu benchmarks sometime last month, and now we’re getting what appears to be even further suggestions and evidence pointing to a release in the near future. It’s worth mentioning that no official announcements or statements have been made by Sony regarding the device, but the model number for it which is SGP412, seems to show up under the downloads and drivers section of Sony’s developer website. This is hardly solid evidence of anything, but it would seem likely that Sony is preparing to announce something soon, if they are already uploading links to download the drivers for a device we have yet to see or have the ability to purchase.
The wifi only capable version of the Xperia Z Ultra isn’t the only device that seems to be making subtle appearances like this though, as another model number pops up in the very same fashion, also on Sony’s own website in the very same directory. The model number is SOL24, which is rumored to be a carrier specific version of the Xperia Z Ultra that is heading to a carrier in Japan. There’s nothing too different about this particular model, as it still carries the cellular radios and everything present in the current models that you can use on a carrier network.
Even though we haven’t heard anything about these two new models of the Z Ultra from Sony themselves, the wifi model in particular has our interests peaked. Sure it can’t be used as openly as a phone that has all the proper cellular radios, but without that feature it would make sense for Sony to drop the price, making it more attainable for someone who is around Wifi most of the time anyway. Which sounds good to us. So far there’s no mention of a release date or any word from Sony on pricing. We suspect those particular details will come up once Sony actually unveils the two new devices. Should the Wifi only version become official and it ends up being cheaper than the models currently available, would you pick one up?
