For a long time now, we’ve been hearing that HTC is working on a smartwatch to compete with the likes of the Galaxy Gear and Sony’s SmartWatch 2. Since then however, things have been a little quiet and while we’ve seen countless concepts of the device, nothing incredibly concrete has come out for a while. That is, until now, as Bloomberg is reporting that not only does HTC has a smartwatch in the works, but they have three wearables all together working their way to market.
According to sources that have spoken to Bloomberg, HTC has a smartwatch that they’ll be showing off behind closed doors at MWC, with no plans to show it to the public. This watch will be based around Qualcomm’s Toq smartwatch and use the same Mirasol technology that the chip giant has been developing for years now. This smartwatch is said to feature music controls and the usual smartwatch features. HTC have always enjoyed a strong relationship with Qualcomm and the Toq is really more of a reference product that you and I could go out and buy, so the idea that HTC is basing their upcoming device around it makes a lot of sense.
The other two devices that HTC is rumored to be working on are both a little different from the norm. One of them is a bracelet-type wearable that’s designed to control music on the user’s device and the other is a little more exciting. The third wearable is said to be a Google Now centric watch that relies on the search giant’s assistant-like helper that’s already running on Android devices all over the world. A lot of us think that Google Now would make a lot of sense of a smartwatch, and I can say for sure that having those notifications pushed to my Sony SmartWatch 2 is helpful. Still though, if HTC were to release an entire watch around the technology, there’s no telling how well it’ll take off.
It’s a shame that there’s no word of HTC showing off their devices next week at Mobile World Congress, but they do have their own event scheduled for March 25th, that might not just be all about the all new HTC One.
