It seems like everyone is going to a flatter UI nowadays. Even Apple did it when they redesigned iOS 7 (which I think looks nice). Now Samsung’s doing it, and of course, many are going to say “Samsung’s copying Apple”, but whatever. Apple’s copied so many features from Android and webOS lately, so who cares?
The latest app to leak out is their new S Health app. Which actually looks really nice in my opinion. Definitely better than the older version of S Health. The app still allows you to track your calorie intake, step count and heart rate, as it could before the redesign. There also appears to be a section for accessories you can buy that work with S Health, including a few scales and such. The screenshot also shows that you can track your run by location, as well as change the song you’re listening to while you are working out, which is always a nice feature to have front-and-center. But we aren’t really here to talk about the features, we’ll learn more about that at the Galaxy S5 event in the next couple of months.
The design of the new S Health app is a huge improvement over the older version. Samsung has decided to use white-on-green as their color palette with lighter and larger fonts, flatter icons and it actually looks like Samsung took some time to read through Google’s Android design guidelines. As they have actually implemented the “Hamburger” slide-out menu bar and are using the overflow action menus at the top of the screen. It does appear to be more “pure” Android than their previous versions of S Health, which could be part of what Google talked to them about at CES last month, about toning down Touchwiz a bit.
It’s going to be really interesting to see how Touchwiz looks in the Galaxy S5, and I’m actually genuinely excited about the announcement. What do the rest of you think? Let us know in the comments below.
