Yesterday, we reported on the word that LG had quietly announced the G2 Mini, but there wasn’t all that much information to work with at that point. Now though, more information has surfaced and we’ve got a clearer picture on just what LG is doing with the G2 Mini. We already know that this is both a mini in name and specs, as the overall feature sheet isn’t all that impressive. However, it wasn’t really designed as such, as the G2 Mini is aimed at those that can’t afford the full G2 but still want one.
On the specs front, the G2 Mini is powered by a quad-core 1.2 Ghz Snapdragon 400 or a 1.7 Ghz Nvidia Tegra 4i for the Latin American market, 1GB of RAM and a 2,440 mAh battery running the show. The 4.7-inch display is an IPS LCD panel, but with a resolution of just 960 x 540, it doesn’t sound all that impressive. Further confusing things is the camera resolution of the G2 Mini, or I should G2 Minis as the pattern emerging is that Latin America is getting the best version of the G2 Mini here. In South America, the G2 Mini features a 13-megapixel camera, while elsewhere it will come with an 8-megapixel camera. That’s a little strange on its own, but we suppose if South America is a successful market for LG, it does make sense to better focus their efforts there.
There’s also a dual-SIM 3G version heading to parts of Europe, too. All of the G2 Minis will be coming with Android 4.4 KitKat, and they’ll also come in black, white as well as red and gold. At 129.6 x 66 x 9.8mm the G2 Mini is certainly “mini” compared to the G2, but with a 4.7-inch display it’s hardly all that compact.
As for when the G2 Mini will be available, LG is saying that the device will hit shelves throughout Europe starting in March. With no American information released, it could be that carriers are holding out to make their own announcements soon.
