Galaxy S5 to Feature A Swipe Fingerprint Scanner?

Samsung’s next big thing is only a few weeks away, with the Unpacked 5 conference on February 24th looking like the big day. We still don’t know all that much about the Galaxy S5, and it’s pretty safe to say that Samsung has done a better job keeping a lid on things they did with last year’s Galaxy S4. Still, we’ve heard enough about the Galaxy S5 to get a good idea of what Samsung’s next big thing will be packing. One thing that we’ve heard time and time again, is that the Galaxy S5 will feature a fingerprint scanner on the device. While not entirely surprisingly, the new tech hasn’t really had that big an effect on smartphones just yet. Apple’s TouchID is pretty great, but only goes so far and in typical Apple fashion is still very limited. Meanwhile in Android land, the HTC One Max featured the same sort of technology, but manged to underwhelm us too, with a lack of real functionality.

According to yet more reports out of Korea, the Galaxy S5 will feature a swipe fingerprint sensor. One that’s built in-house by Samsung. Such a scanner would allow for some interesting interaction with the device and could possibly reduce its physical footprint on the device itself. No matter how good the fingerprint scanner itself is, there’s no doubt that the technology is still in its infancy. Without that “killer app” feature, none of us are really that interested in such a feature. Hopefully though, Samsung’s new toned-down TouchWiz will include some innovative ways to take advantage of such hardware.

This isn’t the firs time that we’ve heard the Galaxy S5 is to come with a fingerprint scanner and, we doubt that it’ll be the last time either. With @evleaks, showing us a glimpse of a system file from the Galaxy S5 that looked a lot like an internal file for running a scanner. Still though, there’s a chance that the fingerprint scanner might skip the Galaxy S5 too, just as it allegedly did with the Galaxy Note 3.
