It’s that time of year again, when companies like HTC and Samsung look to announce their latest and greatest smartphones to catch new sales for the year ahead. We’ve been hearing a lot concerning the follow-up to last year’s HTC One, which is set to be not much more than a revamp of last year’s model. Now, we finally have our first look at the device in the flesh, thanks to a leak pick from the imaginatively named Twitter handle, @htcfamily_ru. The picture above seems to feature an HTC One-looking handset with a dual-LED flash as well as what looks very much like two rear-facing cameras. Originally, leaked cases led us to think that a fingerprint scanner would be included, but looking at this, the cutouts seem made for the dual-LED flash more than anything. The word on the street is that the new HTC One (or whatever it’s going to be called) is to feature two cameras to improve focusing and generally improve the camera performance of the device overall.
HTC’s M8, as it has become known, is set for a launch in New York some time shortly, which should put HTC’s next big thing a little bit before Samsung’s next big thing, which is looking like a February 24th announcement. As for the rest of the M8, we’re allegedly looking at a device with a 1080p display and a quad-core Snapdragon 800 or possibly the Snapdragon 805. You’re probably thinking that the Snapdragon 800 is an aging chip by now, but you couldn’t be more wrong. It’s still making devices like the Galaxy Note 3 and the Google Nexus 5 scream when running the latest version of Android. Besides, HTC only used the Snapdragon 600 in both the HTC One and the HTC One Max last year, so an 800 would be sizable upgrade for them.
Not going down the Quad HD route might sound a little tame as well however, with resolutions getting out of hand at this point, a great 1080p would look a lot better to someone with a mediocre Quad HD panel. The two cameras on the back pose interesting questions – will one be used for low-light photography and the other for everything else? One a small sensor and one a larger, UltraPixel sensor? Only time will tell and the waiting is starting to get to us a little bit. What are you looking forward to most out of the next HTC One?
