Mobile World Congress is officially underway. Last night we got an announcement from Samsung, and this morning Huawei held their own press conference. They announced three different devices, including the mid-range Ascend G6.
The Ascend G6 is a 4.5-inch phone with a 960×540 resolution display, along with a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, with a 8MP camera around back and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean on-board. It also has 4G LTE, so you’ll get plenty of speed, and it should work in the US. The Huawei Ascend G6 is expected to hit the UK in April, but no word on other markets just yet.
Huawei’s Ascend G6 has a metallic edging and a round bottom, if you’ve ever used the Ascend P6, the Ascend G6 will look very similar. The Ascend G6 is only 7.9mm thick, and is a bit fatter than the Ascend P6 which was only 6.18mm thick. The Ascend G6 does look a bit cheaper, as well as feeling cheaper. But it is a bit more comfortable, because it is a smaller device, which a 4.5-inch display. On the sides, Huawei has placed the power button, volume rocker, microUSB port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. They’ve also included 8GB of internal storage, but there is a microSD card slot included if needed.
The display isn’t all that great as expected, as it is only a 960×540 resolution display, which is kind of sad in a time full of 1080p and 2k displays. But if Huawei can price it right, I think they may have a winner here. Of course it’s not going to sell boatloads, but if they can bring it over to the US on Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile and some other prepaid carriers, I’m sure it’ll do quite well.
