While Google doesn’t have a booth at Mobile World Congress this week, the head of Android and Chrome, Sundar Pichai was there and answering questions all week long. Which FrAndroid has provided a nice roundup of all these questions.
Pichai was asked about the “malware problem” on Android, in which he replied:
“We cannot guarantee that Android is designed to be safe, the format was designed to give more freedom. When people talk about 90% of malware for Android, they must of course take into account the fact that it is the most popular operating system in the world. If I had a company dedicated to malware, I would also be addressing my attacks on Android … ”
He was also asked about the odd hybrid user-interface of the Nokia X lineup, which is kind of what Amazon did with their Kindle Fire’s, in which Pichai basically said he doesn’t understand what Nokia was thinking here:
“Sundar laughed and explained that this confirms the high openness of Android. “It shows that when we say that Android is a free operating system, we do not lie, it’s true”. He still said he did not “see clearly” Microsoft’s strategy.”
Then there was the elephant in the room. Samsung and Tizen for the Gear 2 range of devices. Pichai downplayed the decision by Samsung to use Tizen on the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo. Basically saying that it was just one of many hundreds of products and that he was still confident that Samsung would stick with Android for their high-end smartphones. He went as far as to look ahead to the Galaxy S6 in 2015, and stating that flagship will still be running Android. He should have told us what version it would be running…
