According to Re/Code, the new owner of Motorola is looking to make a new line of special edition smartphones that will be launched this year for Ashton Kutcher. Re/Code’s source is Lenovo’s Chief Marketing Officer David Roman. Many of you probably know that Lenovo hired Ashton as their product engineer to develop and promote their new Yoga Tablets which have been doing pretty well for the company. “This partnership with Lenovo brings together my love of technology and design that makes your life better. I can’t wait to dig in and help Lenovo develop future mobile computing products,” Kutcher said when Lenovo made the announcement of making him a product engineer.
Obviously, this isn’t the first time that a company has made a partnership with a celebrity. You may remember Alicia Keys and Blackberry or Lady Gaga and Polaroid. However, it looks like Ashton Kutcher is doing more than both Lady Gaga and Alicia Keys were doing. According to Roman, Kutcher isn’t actually working on any of the design circuitry, the user experience of the phones will be his”I know on one level it sounds corny, but it is real,” Roman stated in an interview. “He not only sees himself as an engineer, but he is an engineer. If he sees a problem, he wants to solve it.” Some of you may know that Kutcher did study biochemical engineering at the University of Iowa before leaving for a modeling career. Kutcher is also the co-founder of A-Grade Investments and is invested in Foursquare, Airbnb and Uber.
It’ll be interesting to see what these special edition phones made from Kutcher and Lenovo look like, and most importantly, how the interface works out. It’s very likely that Lenovo will be making them and not Motorola as these phones are coming out this year, which means they are pretty much done, and just working on the final touches. While the Motorola purchase isn’t yet completed.
