Sony makes some mighty fine hardware, as exhibited by nearly all of their devices on the market. Their smartphones are in a tier of their own too, providing water, scratch and dust-resistant protection that most devices could only dream of, all while being built with premium materials like aluminum and glass. We’ve always liked Sony’s builds, as we’ve pointed out in a number of reviews for Sony phones, but there’s always been one big problem with their designs: bezels. While most manufacturers have significantly shrink the bezel that takes up space between the edge of the screen and the edge of the device, Sony hasn’t seemingly noticed this trend and has bezels that are as thick as many phones were 2 years ago, even on its upcoming phones. That looks to be changing though if Mr. Blurrycam is right on the money here, as an unknown Sony Xperia phone pictured here has inordinately thin bezels that appear to rival even that of the LG G2 which are already incredibly thin thanks to the buttons being on the back of the phone instead of the sides.
These pictures were posted on Chinese forum Digi-wo and are a little more blurry than we’re used to. Why they are so blurry is a mystery, but unfortunately because of their blurry nature there’s no way to tell if these are a legit new device or just maybe a user holding a replacement LCD up to a camera with the cables hooked in. The bezels are so ridiculously thin it makes us feel that Sony must really be paying attention, and it wants to move away from the thicker bezels that have made phones like the Xperia Z Ultra even bigger than they already are. The biggest problem has come more in the top and bottom bezels rather than the side ones too, and neither of those are pictured here. At this point Sharp is the only other manufacturer that has shown newer phones with such small bezels, and those do it because they use a new form of display technology and manufacturing that makes such bezels possible. We know this isn’t Sony’s next flagship Sirius, or probably better known as the Xperia Z2 when it debuts, so what’s Sony got up its sleeves now? It’s possible we won’t see this until quite later in the year as the Sirius seems to be what Sony’s going to concentrate on this month at Mobile World Congress.
