Ok, so Nokia just took the lid off the Nokia X and the Nokia X +, Nokia’s new family of affordable smartphones. Here’s what we knew about the Nokia X so far since before the event. We knew that it was previously going to be named the Nokia Normandy, or perhaps that was just the internal codename. We also knew that it was actually is coming. Thanks to Nokia’s weird press event teaser images, we knew something big was coming from them at MWC as well. With the press event freshly over the Nokia X Android family of devices is here, and opens up some new doors for people looking to get an affordable option into the world of Android. Just don’t expect things to look like the Android we all know and love.
As far as specs go, we have heard the rumors. That it will be surprisingly low end. So far the rumored specs say that the Nokia X are that will be sporting a 4-inch display with a resolution of 800 x 480, and will be packed with a whopping 512MB of RAM. We might see a 3MP or a 5MP camera on the back, a dual-core snapdragon CPU. Rumors are also saying that the Nokia X will have a 1,500 mAh battery, and 4GB of internal storage with expandable memory through the microSD card slot.
Now that all those rumors are out of the way, let’s get down to brass tax. Both the Nokia X and the Nokia X + will run Android apps as well as core Nokia apps, giving users a unique experience and access to some of Nokia and Microsft’s best apps in and Android setting. Both devices are designed heavily after the Lumia family of devices, and provide a similar look and feel to current Windows based Lumia phones. Even the lock screen can be swiped away to reveal the main home screen filled with live tiles just like you would see on a windows phone. Make no mistake though, these devices are absolutely built off of the AOSP(Android Open Source project), with Nokia’s own look of course, and built off of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The Nokia X and the Nokia X + aren’t the only two devices that were announced though, Nokia also unveiled the rumored third device that is part of the “X Family”, the Nokia XL. The Nokia XL has a 5-inch IPS screen, making it the biggest Nokia Android experience of the three. For those who purchase any of the Phones from the Nokia X family, they will get 10GB of OneDrive Storage for free for a year, which is a pretty nice offer although it doesn’t beat the deal that Samsung had with Dropbox. All three devices feature apps and services like Nokia Here Maps and Mix Radio(similar to Pandora). Other apps are available through the Nokia App store which is handled by Nokia themselves, so expect a limited amount of content that you can download directly through the device. Apps are possible to sideload though, so if you can get a hold of apps that are compatible with Android up to version 4.1, you should be able to get them on the devices and working without any problems. The Nokia X will be available immediately for 89 euros, while both the Nokia X+ and the Nokia XL will be available in Q2 for 99 euros, and 109 euros respectively.
