The Nokia X is on its way to market, or at least that’s what we’re led to believe, thanks to the deluge of leaks thanks to folks like @evleaks. With the Nokia X going to be the only Android device in the company’s lineup, we’ve been wondering for some time now just how Nokia is going to be branding the device. Well, thanks to yet another slip up, we could well have the answer. It seems that the Nokia X, or the Normandy as it’s been known, is going to join the company’s Asha lineup.
As with a lot of things concerning the Nokia X, this latest bit of information – which has come from an Indian rep of Nokia’s – is unsurprising. The X is going to be a device for emerging markets, a sector in which Nokia is still somewhat successful in. The Asha line has been a line of feature phones that the company has been selling for a couple of years now. None of them run Windows Phone and we suppose you could call them quasi-smartphones. However, with the likes of the Moto G and Samsung’s budget offerings, Nokia have had to do something different to keep up the sales in emerging markets and as such, the Nokia X will be coming to market in March as yet another Asha device.
We’re unclear on whether or not the X will become the Asha X or be given yet another series of numbers after its name to denote its standing. For a long time now, Android fans have wanted Nokia to create an Android device and the Normandy is perhaps not what a lot of us had in mind. Still, KitKat is said to be on board and thanks to its more frugal attitude, Android 4.4 should run well on the relatively low-end hardware. The X won’t be able to compete with the Moto G, but pricing remains to be seen and the cheaper this is, the bigger a chance Nokia will have in order to make their Asha line seem relevant again.
